What is the Resource Point / TheCommon.org Tool and what can it do for me?
In our community people are our greatest resource. People want to help other people, but the challenge is making the connections. This tool exists to change that by connecting people who have the ability and desire to serve with people who have the need. Register with TheCommon.org and make your needs and abilities known. In the central Florida area, there are two communities are available to join: Seminole County and Northland. Additional communities will be added over time.
I would like to know more about how Resource Point / TheCommon.org works?
TheCommon.org is an online tool that helps meet needs and connects people to serving opportunities. It does this by matching projects with user profiles. Each registered user creates a profile for serving based on his or her skills and abilities, selecting from a list of categories [For example, I can help with Meal Delivery," or "I can help with Home Repairs"]. Along with this, facilitators and users on TheCommon.org load projects related to serving initiatives and local community needs [Such as, "I need a ride to work" and "A refugee family needs furniture"]. Each project is categorized by the types of service needed—when a need in a project matches an ability in a user profile, TheCommon.org notifies that user, giving him or her the option to get involved. Registering with TheCommon.org puts serving opportunities at your fingertips, connecting you with needs and giving you a chance to help meet them. It also provides a place to express need and ask for help from either the Seminole County community or Northland community, all with just a few clicks of a mouse.
How do I get started using Resource Point / TheCommon.org tool?
Register as a user. View the “How To” document and then visit the video portal web site Thecommon.org/university for some two minute videos on the various features of this tool. Lastly, review the social code for tool usage. Refer to the HOW TO SECTION for linkages for these steps.
What is the Market Place within Resource Point / TheCommon.org?
It is a simple way to exchange goods. For example, I have a sofa to donate. As a registered user of the tool, I would list it within the Marketplace. Another registered user who is looking for a sofa would search the Market Place for a sofa and a connection would be made.
What is a facilitator in Resource Point / TheCommon.org?
Facilitators are essentially a second set of eyes on a project; a representative of the community who is there to answer questions, monitor communications and help the process run smoothly. Ultimately a facilitator may end up interacting with the project very little, if at all – but is another chance to build community and encourage people to interact.
